More Than Mouthguards
Gearing up for your next hockey season is an exciting time for those that love being on the ice. It’s a great Canadian sport that many of us enjoy and support.
While you’re gathering up gear for your league, we do recommend some hockey safety tips to maintain your oral and overall health. Hockey as a sport assumes inherited risks for tooth loss, concussions, broken bones and more. It’s important to be aware of these risks, learn how to prevent them and gear up accordingly.
In addition to all of the pads and outfitting, you may be tempted to get a boil and bite mouthguard because they’re simple and cost effective. However, if you want to be able to speak clearly with your teammates on the ice and have better protection for your teeth, we can provide you with a custom teeth guard.
Because we feel so strongly about your optimal protection, custom sports guards are available to our patients and new patients for free upon meeting certain requirements. Call us today at 905-858-2345 to arrange a visit to get your sports guard fitted.
Whether you’re an amateur or a professional hockey player, there are also ways to prevent further bodily injury through proper helmet usage and good sportsmanship on the ice. A non-profit organization called Think First focuses on concussion prevention for hockey players and advises the following:
- Neck exercises prior to the game
- Proper helmet fitting
- Don’t trip/push another player from behind
- Never hit to the head, just shoulder to shoulder
- Control your stick responsibly
- No suicide passes
- Communicate with your teammates
- Respect everyone
We are happy to sponsor the sport of hockey in Mississauga. We’ve been involved with supporting competitive and house league teams in the community over the years. Wishing you all the best next season and play safe!
