What is a Dental Implant ?

A dental implant is a replacement tooth or teeth attached to surgically embedded anchors in your jawbone. Your natural bone will lock and fuse the implant into place, providing support and stability. It is a permanent solution that replicates your natural teeth in both form and function. Because they are securely fastened to the jaw, they will not shift or slip.

Dental implants are usually made of titanium, a strong, sturdy biocompatible material that is accepted by the body. Ceramic alternatives are also available for those with metal allergies. In some cases, the implant can be placed in as little as one session. We then give the implant time to fuse with the jawbone. Once the implant is fully fused, the final restored crown or bridge is placed. These artificial teeth are carefully crafted to blend in with your existing teeth, matching them perfectly in shape and colour.

Benefits of Implants

Dental implants are a life-long solution that save healthy teeth, and improve quality of life. They look, feel and function just like healthy, natural teeth. Because implants are surgically embedded, you will be able to bite and chew your meals more easily.  You will once again be able to eat what you want once again, instead of just what you can. Dental implants offer many important health benefits too. They reduce bone loss and save adjacent healthy teeth, which may otherwise be impacted by the missing tooth. Implants also preserve your facial structure, helping you to look younger. With proper care, they can last a lifetime.

Implants for one missing tooth

Depending on the degree of tooth loss, implant dentistry can be performed several different ways. Therefore, an implant specialist will assess each patient individually to decide the best method for that person. If you are missing one tooth, one option is a tooth-supported fixed bridge. This type of implant uses the two healthy teeth on either side of the missing tooth to support an artificial tooth. The healthy teeth are prepared for crowns and the custom made artificial tooth is attached to those two crowns.

Another option is an implant supported crown, which is a custom made crown attached to your jawbone with a tiny artificial root that looks like a screw. In all cases, the artificial tooth will match the look and feel of your existing teeth perfectly so no one will ever know that you have an implant.

Implant Options for Several Missing Teeth

If you are missing several teeth, an implant supported fixed bridge may be the best option. A bridge of two or more teeth is made to fit between two implants. Sometimes, however, multiple single implants are a viable solution too. Each case is as individual as the person and we carefully assess each patient for the best option.

Total Mouth Implant Options

If you are missing all of your teeth, your options will be carefully considered based on your current health. Implant supported removable dentures use two or four implants to support the denture. A fixed bridge, however, uses however many implants are deemed necessary to support the bridge. Dental implants are proven to be superior to dentures for fit, comfort and durability. These artificial teeth are just like real ones, and will need regular oral hygiene care and dental check-ups to ensure that they will last.
