If you or your child are involved in sports like hockey, lacrosse, basketball, baseball, soccer or even martial arts you should be protected by a custom mouth guard. At Winston Churchill Dental we believe that your safety is most important, that is why we are proud to offer a Free Custom Mouth Guard to all our patients. Patients are required to complete a dental exam including a set of x-rays, dental hygiene cleaning, and basic restorative treatment prior to getting the sports mouth guard.

Missing teeth may be cute in small children, but many adults feel extremely self-conscious about their smile if they have experienced tooth loss. People are living longer lives in a more esthetically pleasing way, which are two good reasons to consider tooth replacement options. What many people are not aware of is the impact that missing teeth may negative have on their health.

When you lose a tooth, there is a small area on your jawbone that no longer needs to provide support because the tooth and the root structure are no longer present. Your jawbone begins to lose its strength and firmness without that support. This deterioration does not happen immediately, but it is a concern for anyone who has missing teeth.

Wearing a mouth guard is an important precaution for athletes of all ages and abilities, helping to protect against chipped or broken teeth, root and bone damage, and tooth loss. Mouth guards also safeguard against serious injuries such as jaw fracture, cerebral hemorrhage, concussion and neck injuries by helping to avoid situations where the lower jaw jams into the upper jaw. By keeping soft tissue in the oral cavity away from the teeth, mouth guards help prevent cutting and bruising of the lips, tongue and cheeks, especially for athletes who wear orthodontic appliances.

A properly fitted sports mouth guard must be:

• protective
• comfortable
• resilient
• tear resistant
• tasteless
• have excellent retention and fit
• cause minimal interference to speaking and breathing

Types of Mouth Guards

Mouth guards are available in three types:

Stock mouth guards, which can be purchased in sporting goods and drug stores, come pre-formed and ready to wear. Although they’re the least expensive, they are also the worst fitting and least comfortable or protective. Made of rubber or polyvinyl, these pre-formed guards can be bulky, increase the tendency to gag, and make breathing and talking difficult because they require the jaw to be closed to hold them in place.

Mouth-formed mouth guards can be either a shell liner or a boil-and-bite kind. The first type is lined with acrylic gel or rubber that molds to the teeth and sets to keep its shape. The second type, made of thermoplastic, is placed in boiling water then formed and molded to the contours of the teeth using the fingers, lips, tongue and biting pressure. Boil-and-bite mouth guards can be reheated and refitted if the fit isn’t comfortable initially.

Both types of mouth-formed mouth guards are available online and at sporting goods and drug stores. While they do provide a better fit than stock mouth guards, they can be bulky and do not offer the same fit and protection as a custom-fitted mouth guard.

Custom-fitted mouth guards are more expensive than the other types of mouth guards, but they provide the greatest degree of fit, comfort and protection because they are made from a cast to precisely fit your teeth. Your dentist makes an impression of your teeth and a dental laboratory technician — either in the dentist’s office or at an off-site dental laboratory — uses the impression as a mold to create the custom-fitted mouth guard.

Invisalign is the virtually invisible way to straighten your teeth without braces, using a series of clear, removable aligners to straighten your teeth without metal wires or brackets. You wear each set of clear aligners for about two weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move – little by little, week by week – until they have straightened to the final position your orthodontist or dentist has prescribed. You’ll visit your orthodontist or dentist about once every six weeks to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned.

Total treatment time averages 9-15 months and the average number of aligners worn during treatment is between 18 and 30, but both will vary from case to case.

How does Invisalign work?

An Invisalign-trained dentist will utilize 3D computer imaging technology to demonstrate the complete treatment plan from the initial position to the final desired position. This imaging technology is then used to design an individualized series of custom-made aligners. The patient wears the aligner for about two weeks while the teeth move incrementally. After two weeks, the current aligner is replaced with the next one until the final position is achieved.

What do aligners look like?

Aligners are clear and nearly invisible. If you’ve ever seen clear tooth-whitening trays, that should give you a good idea of what the aligners look like. Invisalign aligners are custom-made to fit and move your teeth.

Will the treatment be painful?

Each time you change to a new aligner, there may be some temporary discomfort while your teeth adjust to their new position. This is completely normal, and is a good sign that the treatment is working.

Will wearing Invisalign aligners affect my speech?

Some people are affected more than others, but most adjust in a short period of time to the feeling of the aligners and do not have permanent changes in their speech.

How often will I have to wear my aligners?

Invisalign only works while you’re wearing the aligners. It’s recommended that you wear your aligners full-time, day and night, except to eat, brush, and floss your teeth.

How much does Invisalign cost?

Cost is always a concern, and only your doctor can determine the price of treatment. It is typically in the same range as ordinary metal braces. Any insurance plan that covers orthodontics should cover Invisalign.
